Achikoko "Aimi" Pottery Studio


Would you like to try your hand at creating yachimun—Okinawa’s traditional pottery—using local clay? Feel the soothing texture of the earth in your hands, experience the joy of shaping it into form, and discover the warmth that yachimun embodies. It’s a meaningful way to connect with the island’s rich culture and natural blessings. Artist Aimi Chinen will guide you through the process with care and joy, making it a memorable part of your journey.

Lecturer : Aimi Chinen

Born in Okinawa, Japan. Artist.
In 2014, she studied under Silvia Levenson at the Pilchuck Glass School.
In 2015, she worked as a teaching assistant for Ms. Erika Tada at the Pilchuck Glass School. She later earned her bachelor's degree in ceramics from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
In 2019, she earned her Master’s degree in Intermedia and Digital Arts from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is also a recipient of the Lang Taylor Award from Duke University.
From 2019 to 2023, she served as Professor of Art specializing in ceramics at McDaniel College in Maryland.
In 2023, she was selected as a finalist for the Aftermath Project Grant.
Hand-Built Pottery
Using Okinawan clay, you’ll shape your own unique pieces such as plates and “makai” (traditional Okinawan bowls). Personalize your creation by engraving your name or favorite patterns to complete your one-of-a-kind vessel.

Pottery Carving
Using Okinawan clay, you will shape a lidded vessel. Personalize your piece by carving your name or a design of your choice to complete your creation.

Pottery Wheel
Clay is placed on a spinning wheel and carefully shaped by hand as it rotates to form the desired piece.

- ・Please wear clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
- ・For ease of shaping, please ensure your nails are kept as short as possible. Long nails may hinder the process.
- ・Please note that due to the nature of ceramics, factors such as changes in humidity caused by weather and uneven thickness can sometimes cause pieces to crack during firing. While we provide guidance to minimize these risks, breakage may still occur. We ask that you accept this possibility as part of the pottery experience when participating.
- ・Please notify us of any cancellations or changes by 9:00 p.m. the day before your reservation. Cancellations made after this time will incur a 100% cancellation fee. Thank you for your understanding.
