Bingata Dyeing Experience with a Local Artist

Unique program

Learn the traditional art of Bingata dyeing from an accomplished artist whose work has been exhibited both in Okinawa and internationally. Dating back to the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 13th century, Bingata is known for its vibrant colors inspired by the islands’ subtropical landscapes. Guided by award-winning Bingata artist Yuka Arakaki, guests create their own piece using an original design specially created for The Uza Terrace, an experience that offers a meaningful connection to Okinawa’s rich cultural heritage.

Lecturer : Yuka Arakaki

Raised in Okinawa, Yuka Arakaki discovered the traditional craft of Bingata at an early age and was drawn to its vivid colors inspired by the island’s strong sunlight. After graduating from the Textile Design Department of Okinawa Prefectural Shuri High School, she trained at a Bingata workshop and the Okinawa Prefectural Craft Promotion Center before making her debut as an artist in 2009.

She received the Grand Prize at the Ryugin Bingata Design Contest in both 2011 and 2012, and her work has since been selected for major exhibitions including the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten) and the Japan New Craft Exhibition. Based in Yomitan Village, Okinawa, she is recognized for a distinctive style that blends traditional Bingata techniques with contemporary expression.
